Musician Biographies

 

Ciompi String Quartet 
World renowned string quartet, founded in 1965 by the distinguished Italian violinist Giorgio Ciompi. Regularly tours throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Collaborates on a regular basis with leading soloists, including Menahem Pressler, Branford Marsalis, and Susan Naruki, among others. Quartet in Residence: Duke University. Recordings: CRI, Arabesque, Albany, Gasparo, and Sheffield Lab labels. Members: Eric Pritchard, first violin; Hsiao-Mei Ku, second violin; Jonathan Bagg, viola; Fred Raimi, cello.

Dorian Wind Quintet 
Internationally renowned ensemble, founded at Tanglewood in 1961. Has literally been around the world-concertizing in 49 of the 50 states in the US and Canada, touring Europe eighteen times, and playing throughout the Middle East, India, Africa and Asia. Made history as the first wind quintet to appear at Carnegie Hall (1981). Collaborates with major soloists on a regular basis including Phyllis Bryn-Julson, Jean Casadesus, Phyllis Curtin, Lukas Foss, Claude Frank, Lee Hoiby, Lorin Hollander, Ruth Laredo, Jean-Pierre Rampal, James Tocco, and Beveridge Webster..Has appeared at numerous festivals throughout world including the Stravinsky Festival at Lincoln Center, International Festival in Warsaw, Caramoor International Music Festival, Newberry Spring Festival (Great Britain), Stratford Festival in Ontario, San Luis Obispo Festival, and the New American Music Festival in Sacramento. Recordings: Vox, CRI, Serenus, New World, and Summit Records labels. Members: Gretchen Pusch, flute; Gerard Reuter, oboe; Jerry Kirkbride, clarinet; Ethan Bauch, bassoon; Nancy Billmann, horn.

Timothy Day, Flute
Currently principal flute of the San Francisco Symphony and an active soloist and chamber musician. Formerly, he was principal flute of the Baltimore Symphony for 12 years, and was principal flute of the California Symphony. In addition, he participates in music festivals in San Diego, Moab, Montréal, Mohonk and St. Bart's, and has an active recording schedule. He currently also serves as both Professor of Flute and Chair of the Woodwind Department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Matthew Edwards, Piano
Active concert pianist and chamber musician, who has also worked as soloist with several prominent orchestras and chamber ensembles. His work in contemporary music has led to regular appearances with several new music groups, including the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Composers, Inc., Stanford Woodwind Quintet, ALEA Ensemble, and SIRIUS, among others. Principal pianist: San Francisco Symphony Chorus.

Amy Hiraga, Violin
Member: Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, since 1991. Current member: San Francisco Symphony. Performances and recordings: Orchestra of St. Luke's, New York Chamber Orchestra, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Soloist: Seattle Symphony, Aspen Philharmonia, Solisti New York, Northwest Chamber Orchestra, and St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble. Chamber music Performances: Santa Fe, Caramoor, Bard, Olympic, Chamber Music West, St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, Chelsea Ensemble, among others.

Kees Hülsmann, Violin
Soloist with many prominent orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Halle Symphony Orchestra, with many distinguished conductors, including Valery Gergiev, Michael Tilson Thomas, Kent Nagano, and Sir Charles Mackerras. Concertmaster: The Rotterdam Philharmonic since 1986. Previous concertmaster: Halle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. Founding member: Netherlands String Quartet and Robert Schumann Trio. Recordings: Telarc, New Albion (Lewis' First Violin Concerto), Olympia, Lapis Island, among others.

Marc Shapiro, Piano
A member of the San Francisco Symphony, he is also currently the principal pianist for the California Symphony and was the San Francisco Symphony Chorus accompanist from 1984-2003. He has toured with the San Francisco Symphony throughout Europe and the United States and as featured soloist; he has performed Stravinsky's Les Noces, Saint Saen's Carnival of the Animals, Martin's Petite Symphonie Concertante and James P. Johnson's Yamekraw. Recordings: Cantelina, New Albion, Music and Art, Argo, Delos, d'Note and Lapis Island Records.

Peter Wyrick, Cello
Associate principal cellist: San Francisco Symphony. Former member: Ridge String Quartet. Former principal cellist: Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra (Lincoln Center) and associate principal cellist: New York City Opera Orchestra. Chamber musician and soloist with renowned chamber groups, orchestras, and festivals throughout the world, including Finland's Helinski Festival, Spoleto Festival (US and Italy), and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Recordings: RCA (winner: French Diapason d'Or), Dell' Arte, Arabesque and Stereophile.
